monday mantra

“Monday Mantra” is a weekly feature, where I share an affirmation or quote that resonates with me that I’d like to try following for the upcoming week. Essentially, I’d like to start the week with positive intent, as an effort to keep those good vibes flowing through the week! You can look at past Monday Mantra posts here, and if you’re not sure what affirmations are, I talk about them here.

Probably a week or so ago I started reading a book entitled You Are A Badass by Jen Sincero, after randomly picking a book off the bestseller shelf at Barnes & Noble during a particularly mental-hangry moment (you know the kind, when you just feel like absorbing all the info possible around you). I’m definitely going to do a review, because so far the book is just eye opening. Guys, if you’re out and you see this book, just flip through the first few pages and then try to not buy it. I bet you will. Or you won’t, out of spite (shame on you).

I’m not sure if it’s this rad book making me re-think my life, or just how I’ve felt refreshed after my little jaunt last week, but I really want to take a look at how I react to situations and overall just try to have a more positive attitude. For that reason, I’ve chosen this mantra for this coming week:

monday mantra

More and more lately I’m realizing that there is no point in holding on to something that annoys, upsets, or just overall doesn’t benefit you positively, both in a physical as well as a mental sense. I’m also realizing, that in most cases, happiness is a choice.

Yes, we’re all going to find ourselves in situations that might not be the most favorable or with the most favorable people, but have you ever found that holding on to being annoyed or angry has actually helped you? As a server I often find myself dealing with people who are just downright rotten for the sake of being rotten, but letting them get to me is silly! By adjusting my perception and being able to see that the attitude issues are really something deeper with the customer (or maybe it’s not; maybe it’s a bad day) and not a problem of mine, it’s easier to not let them affect me.

I also think that how I react and interpret a situation speaks volumes about me, and if I find that something upsets me or makes me jealous, maybe I need to look further. Why am I seeing such-and-such this way? What’s causing this reaction from me? Once I can diagnose that, I should be able to let it go and move forward! No one wants to dwell in their unhappiness, right? At least I don’t!

Do you ever have those days where you lose track of time and spend hours doing something, but at the end of the day realize you have nothing to show for it? Where you swear you’ve been busting your butt being busy, but in actuality you’ve just been wasting your time? Basically, one of those days where you somehow got lost in a rabbit hole of social media? Yea, me either (not).

I actually had a whole different Monday Mantra post intended, but ended up somehow wasting away 6 hours and fell asleep before I could actually put my thoughts down, leading me to choose this new mantra for the week:
monday mantra

This coming week I’d really like to focus on managing my time better. If you know me in person, I’m very rarely on time. To anything. I’m not quite sure how I always get caught up in new little projects right as I should be walking out the door, but I do (seriously, almost every time I actually have to be somewhere).

I also need to really take a page from my first mantra and be better with my technology usage, so that I’m able to focus on more important things, like accomplishing the tasks I have at hand! There’s only so many hours, and while it’s okay to give myself a break here and there to relax, there’s no point in just mindlessly wasting away hours where I could be accomplishing something! I’m going to try my best to prioritize and plan out my day so I’m appropriately using time, and maybe even set alarms not just for waking up, but also for when I truly need to leave the house.

I talked about it last week, but I hope everyone is hanging in there through Mercury’s retrograde! This past week’s gloomy weather has really put me on a mental rollercoaster. Does anyone else find themselves super struggling with seasonal depression-type effects after a few days (or a week in my case) of complete bummers-ville weather? Sorry my post calendar was all mangled but it got to the point where I could barely get myself moving, let alone writing!

Despite all the gloom trouble, on Tuesday this past week when I went to snag the subway, I managed to find a student weekly trans pass on the ground, which meant I basically got to ride the subway for free for 5 days (until Saturday)! Not only that, when I left work last night on the one day I would’ve had to pay for my ride, a woman gave me her pass because she was done with it. A week of free rides!!

I started thinking about how lucky I’d been… which troubled me a bit, because that’s not a concept I really believe in. For that reason, I chose this as my Monday mantra:

monday mantra

I don’t think luck exists, I think people create their own. If you disagree, that’s totally fine, but hear me out here. I’ve actually found a lot of working trans passes on the ground while I’ve lived in Philadelphia, and though some may think I’m lucky, I think it’s just that I’m paying attention. Much to my boyfriend’s dismay, I’m almost always stopping to check out stuff that’s on the ground, but it’s resulted in me finding a bunch of rad stuff, including money! I also think positive energy attracts positive energy, and that woman clearly was feeling generous and happy if she was willing to share! 🙂

Have you ever known anyone who felt like they were an “unlucky” person, so it seemed like they were going out of their way to put themselves into crappy, “unlucky” situations, because they already assumed the worst would happen? And then it usually did? That’s literally someone creating their luck, just the bad kind!

This coming week, I’m going to do the opposite, and just put out good energy that things are going to happen, trying to chase situations with a positive mindset. I think if I have a positive attitude, good things will come to me!!

PS. For being so patient, I shared a little sneak peek over on my facebook page from Kenya because everyone has been so patient. Sorry this week’s gloom got me behind!

Anyone get themselves into the situation where they have something they want to start doing, but feel like they need to do it on a good note so they set a date or moment for it? Like, “I’ll start eating healthy on Monday“, or “I’ll start focusing on better habits once I’m done with this and that so I can better commit myself”, but then once Monday comes around or you finished with whatever, you push back starting because you just don’t feel like it?? Same.

I get myself so dang caught up in the end result and things working out in a certain way that I tend to forget about the most important step in the beginning of any process: just starting. For this reason, I decided on this affirmation for this week:

monday mantra

While on my trip in Kenya I found myself deciding that once I got back I wanted to fully commit to eating gluten free and being healthier. I had all the tools to start doing it on the spot… so why didn’t I?

Starting a task can seem like the most daunting thing, especially because we’ve become accustomed to comparing our behind the scenes with everyone else’s highlight reel (hellooo social media), and anything less than the absolute best can be viewed as failure, when it’s really all just part of the process! I mean, do you know how many greats failed before they actually found success?? A LOT. When you start imagining the process as putting one foot in front of the other, and let yourself be willing to fall, it becomes so much easier.

I’m going to try to commit to healthy eating for real toay (because it’s Monday, duh), but I’m going to also try to focus on getting myself to start projects immediately when I’m inspired to, rather than putting everything off.

Do you have any affirmations you’re going to focus on this week?
Are you going to try starting something new?
